The collection consists of nineteen handwritten letters, 1817-1841, to various recipients. Most letters are parts of ongoing correspondence, often to other lawyers or diplomats, and seem to focus on personal affairs as well as the politics of Massachusetts and the United States. Includes letters to S.T. Armstrong, I.J. Austin, Sylvanus Bourne, Joseph Blunt, Leslie Combs, J.E. Sprague, H.A.S. Dearborn, B. Fr. Butler, Artemas Hale, and various law firms.

Alexander Hill Everett was a distinguished early American diplomat, writer, and man of letters. He entered Harvard at the age of twelve, and apprenticed at the law office of John Quincy Adams. He served in a variety of notable diplomatic posts, and contributed to the evolution of American culture and literary tradition. Artemas Hale was born in Winchendon, Massachusetts, on October 20, 1783, the son of Moses Hale and his wife, Ruth Foster Hale. Despite receiving little formal education, he worked as a schoolteacher in Hingham, Massachusetts, between 1804 and 1814. Afterward, he moved to Bridgewater, Massachusetts, where he became involved in the manufacture of cotton gins.
