Quarter-plate daguerreotype in leather case of a portrait painting of Ellen D'Hauteville, daughter of David Sears (1787-1871), probably originally painted by the artist Thomas Sully. The photograph was taken ca. 1845, probably after her divorce from Gonzalve d'Hauteville, by an unknown photographer. Enclosed is a note in an unknown hand that identifies the photograph.

Artist Thomas Sully was born in London, although his actor parents soon emigrated to the United States. A trip back to England to study painting expanded his horizons, and upon his return to the United States he developed a reputation as a first rate painter.
