Sixth-plate, hand-colored daguerreotype in leather case of the author and educator Arthur Gilman (1837-1909), founder of Radcliffe College (1879) and the Gilman School for Girls (1886) in Boston, Mass. The photograph was taken in 1854 by an unknown photographer. A notation on the inside of the case in an unknown hand identifies the subject and date.
