The collection includes a letter addressed to Emily Barnes, January 4, 1864, regarding the first draft of the Emancipation Proclamation: "I have the pleasure of sending you, with the President's permission, the original draft of his September proclamation. The body of his own handwriting, the penciled additions in the hand of the Secretary of State, and the formal beginning and ending in the hand of the Chief Clerk." (Original item stored in the vault) The collection also includes a statement by Dr. Henry A, Holmes regarding the purchase of the first draft of the Emancipation Proclamation for the sum of $1000. by Gerrit Smith, who later sold it for the same amount to the State of New York for deposit in the New York State Library. (Original item stored in the vault) The remaining two documents in the collection include a letter dated December 30, 1865 concerning United States foreign relations with Canada; and a letter of February 6, 1906, regarding historical information about members of the New York State delegations at early Republican Conventions.
