Author, teacher, Methodist Episcopal minister; of Kansas, Minnesota. John J. Lutz was born in Smithville, Ohio, on January 28, 1855. Attending public schools, he later went to college in Ohio. Lutz migrated to Kansas in 1885 after teaching 10 years in Ohio. He continued teaching until 1890. William Clarke Quantrill was born in Canal Dover, Ohio in 1837. He came to Kansas as a young man, and taught school for a while before he became active in the border wars, between free state and pro-slavery forces in the fight for Kansas statehood. He fought on the Confederate side during the Civil War, participating in guerrilla warfare.
