D.J. Taylor Papers, 1940-1970 (bulk 1940-1945).

Collection consists of two diaries and a small pocket book. One diary contains daily entries (1 January 1945-3 November 1945), and details military life during the last year of the war. Topics include meals, drinking habits of the troops, his job as an air-frame fitter, letters from home, and the soldiers' recreational activities. The diary also documents major war news and events, including the deaths of President Roosevelt and Adolf Hitler, V-E Day, the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the surrender of Japan. The second diary (1940-1962) contains personal information, addresses, and some daily diary entries (primarily 1940-1944). The small pocket book (1946-1970), includes information on insurance and finances (some related to Mr. Taylor's mother); various lists; and a chronological account of Taylor's military service, work records, and hospital visits. There are also three war medals ("The Burma Star," the "1939-1945 Star," and a medal from Great Britain) and a black-and-white photograph of Taylor in military uniform. Acquired as part of the William B. Hamilton Collection of British Manuscripts. (02-050).
