Papers, 1919-1967 (bulk 1934-1939).

Much of the collection consists of correspondence with his friends in both politics and the newspaper business. The bulk of the material covers the years when Richard M. Long was secretary to Senator George McGill. The major portion of he collection deals with elections in Kansas during the 1930s. Elections covered are the Franklin D. Roosevelt-Alfred M. Landon presidential election of 1936 and the George McGill-Clyde Reed senatorial election of 1938. The materials include political predictions, voting patterns in the 1928-1934 elections, campaign tactics and assorted political correspondence. The collection covers many of the issues of the 1930s and their impact on Kansas. Among these are the Rural Electrification Administration, the Works Progress/Work Projects Administration, the Pope-McGill Farm Bill, Roosevelt's attempt to pack the Supreme Court, and military assistance to Great Britain & France when they were threatened by the Nazis. A portion of the collection deals with Wichita's Cowtown and contains legal contracts & lease agreements. Also included is material on the Kansas State Historical Society (Topeka) and the Friendship Food Train. The collection also includes newspaper clippings, political pamphlets, and other miscellaneous documents produced or received by Long.
