Smith's papers contain some correspondence (including correspondence with composer Florence B. Price and her teacher Stella Roberts), a scrapbook, concert programs, and a folder of poems and texts she apparently considered for musical settings. Also included are items relating to her activities as a teacher and musician, a file of clippings and programs on composer and conductor Margaret Harris (1943-2000), composition exercises and reworkings of compositions by other composers that Smith retained after her studies, class notes, textbooks and books on theory and composition, and her collection of music by other composers.

Irene Britton Smith (1907-1999) was born and educated in Chicago. Though professionaly she taught reading in the Chicago Public schools for forty years, during her summer vacations, she studied music, receiving a B. Mus. from the American Conservatory in 1946 and a M. Mus. from DePaul University in 1956. Florence Beatrice Price (b. April 9, 1887, Little Rock, AK–d. June 3, 1953, Chicago, IL) was born to a well respected interracial couple. Her first piano performance was at age four and her first composition was published at 11. At 14, Price graduated from Capitol High School as valedictorian and enrolled in the New England Conservatory of Music.
