Katherine W. Montgomery Gym collection, 1948-1973.

Plaques, blueprints, awards, certificates, correspondence, trophy, a painting and photographs. Several black and white photographs are available covering subjects such as dance, archery, gymnastics, track, campus, circus, swimming, the 1962 Homecoming Queen, and exercise. Of note is an oil painting entitled, "Their Spirit Will Never Die," given in honor of Katherine W. Montgomery, painted by B.J. Cobb, class of 1951, in 1955.

The Montgomery Gym was constructed in 1938 as the physical education facility of Florida State College for Women, containing a pool, basketball court, and a bowling alley. The bowling alley no longer exists, but the pool is still in operation. The building was named for Dr. Katherine Williams Montgomery, a 1918 graduate of FSCW. In 1920 she became an instructor of Physical Education there, and in 1923 was named director of Physical Education. Dr. Montgomery died on October 1, 1958. F...

According to Robin Sellers' Femina Perfecta, in 1914 members of the even-year classes of Florida State College for Women (juniors and freshmen) wore their green and yellow class colors to chapel on the Saturday morning before Thanksgiving. A spontaneous pep rally ensued.
