General description of the collection: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ordnance facilities reports were prepared during the wartime expansion program of 1940s when the Ordnance Department (Dept.) (under the Quartermaster Corps) created an interlocking network of ordnance facilities that were owned by the government and operated by private industry as government-owned, contractor-operated (GOCO) facilities. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers selected the contractors and supervised the on-site construction. This collection consists of field progress reports or completion reports written by the Area Engineer on twenty-six ordnance facilities between 1941 and 1944. Most of the reports (which were filed at the appropriate district office) contain a detailed description of the local topography, transportation infrastructure, manufacturing and living facilities, ordnance manufactured, utilities and communications, sources of water and power, sewage and industrial waste disposal systems, soil conditions, results of soil and water analyses, sources of labor, and names of the prime as well as subcontractors. Also documented in the reports are conditions existing at the start of the job, problems encountered during construction, and lessons learned. Several reports contain copies of record drawings of the general layout of the buildings. Also included is a report entitled: REPORT ON PROPOSED FACILITIES FOR PRODUCTION OF TANK ARMOR.
