Born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 30, 1926. Received an AB degree in 1949, an MS degree in 1951, and a PhD degree in 1958 all in geology from Harvard. Began work for the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington in 1953, and conducted geological research throughout his entire career there. A major professional achievement was the development of a piston-cylinder apparatus in the early 1960s, called the Boyd-England device. Retired in 1996; passed away on January 12,...
