The Society of Friends (or 'Quakers') was formed by George Fox (1624-1691), a shoemaker from Nottingham. In the 1640s Fox travelled throughout England delivering sermons in which he argued that individuals could have direct access to God without the need for churches, priests or other aspects of the established Church. The Victoria Institute, at Hartshead Moor near Scholes, was established in 1868. This was largely on the intiative of Robert Firth Crosland (of the long-established local Quaker family), who acted firstly as Secretary and Treasurer, and then as President. One of the Institute's first activities was to form a brass band.
