Herschel Vespasian Johnson was born on September 18, 1812, in Burke County. Like most of Georgia's antebellum political lights, Johnson passed through the University of Georgia, graduating in 1834. He took up the law and established prosperous practices in Augusta, Louisville, and finally Milledgeville, the state capital. Two generations; Charles, ca. 1795-1844, was a hatter, member of the Texan Santa Fe Expedition, and one of a party of Santa Fe traders captured by Mexican authorities. His nephews, George Alonzo Johnson and Albert J. Johnson, worked a ferry and steamship company on the Colorado River. Albert became a lawyer and business manager for Don Pio Pico.
