Félix Candela was born in 1910 in Madrid, Spain, and trained there as an architect. In 1939, during the Spanish Civil War, he emigrated to Mexico. Candela specialized in the design and construction of thin concrete shells. Among his many projects are the cosmic ray laboratory at the Ciudad Universitaria, the church of the Miraculous Virgin in Mexico City, and the Sports Palace used in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City.
