Records of the State Prison of Southern Michigan, 1894-1975.

This record group consists of two sets of records of the Michigan State Prison/State Prison of Southern Michigan. The first set of records are selected administrative subject files of the warden (1894, 1934, 1937, 1948-73, bulk covers 1952-71). Includes letters, memorandums, minutes, reports, and analyses in/out of the office of the warden. Reflects the warden's relationship with the director of the Department of Corrections and the Central Office staff; the warden's immediate staff; the inmate population; and the public. Specific topics include budget proposals, capital outlay needs, capital punishment, and homosexuality in prison. The second set of records are surveys, studies and reports (1940-76). These relate to many aspects of the prison. The topics include health care, food service, short and long term construction needs, security measures, fire prevention, library needs and services, staffing needs, inmate work assignments, and camp programs.

The Michigan State Prison (also known as Jackson Prison) was established by law in Jackson, Michigan in 1838. The prison changed its name to the State Prison of Southern Michigan in 1935. The prison closed on January 4, 2002. The prison was under the jurisdiction of the Michigan Department of Corrections, which was established in 1937.
