Records of the State Prison of Southern Michigan, 1928-1977.

This record group consists of various records of the Michigan State Prison/State Prison of Southern Michigan for the years 1928-1977. The first group of records are subject files (Apr. 1952-1954) relating to the 1952 prison riot. Includes correspondence, investigative reports, staff meeting minutes, speech of warden after riot, and final agreement (with drafts) between the inmates and prison officials. Also includes an audio tape of interviews with the riot hostages. The record group also includes: newspaper clippings (1933-1977); staff photographs (n.d.); a brochure entitled Treating today's offender (1949); and daily gains and losses (1928-1954) of prisoners (new prisoners, escaped, transferred, etc.).

The Michigan State Prison (also known as Jackson Prison) was established by law in Jackson, Michigan in 1838. The prison changed its name to the State Prison of Southern Michigan in 1935. The prison closed on January 4, 2002. The prison was under the jurisdiction of the Michigan Department of Corrections, which was established in 1937.
