Records of the State Prison of Southern Michigan, 1857-1918.

Series 8 and 9 of Record Group 64-50 consist of records relating to parole and discharge from the Michigan State Prison. The first series is a record of parole (1889-1904) offering name; occupation; age; nativity; number of prisoner and parolee; date of sentence; term; date of term expiration; name, post office address and occupation of first friend; date of parole; dates of reports made; and amounts parolee earned. The second series is a record of discharge by expiration of sentence (1857-1918). This is a monthly record created by the hall master and includes name, date of sentence, term, number of days off sentence and date of discharge.

The Michigan State Prison (also known as Jackson Prison) was established by law in Jackson, Michigan in 1838. The prison changed its name to the State Prison of Southern Michigan in 1935. The prison closed on January 4, 2002. The prison was under the jurisdiction of the Michigan Department of Corrections, which was established in 1937.
