Consists of a register of inmates offering number; name; county of residence; dates received, sentenced, escaped, returned, transferred, death, pardoned, or discharged; physical description; offense; summary of convictions; and use of tobacco. Photographs of prisoners are included beginning with 9000-18653. Arranged numerically 7253-18653. Includes an index (ca. 1875-1960).

The Michigan State Prison (also known as Jackson Prison) was established by law in Jackson, Michigan in 1838. The prison changed its name to the State Prison of Southern Michigan in 1935. The prison closed on January 4, 2002. The prison was under the jurisdiction of the Michigan Department of Corrections, which was established in 1937.
