The minutes are of regular and special meetings and include directives, rules and regulations and policy statements relating to the physical operation and administration of the prison, care and punishment of prisoners, and employment of prisoners in manufacturing.

The Michigan State Prison (also known as Jackson Prison) was established by law in Jackson, Michigan in 1838. The prison changed its name to the State Prison of Southern Michigan in 1935. The prison closed on January 4, 2002. The prison was under the jurisdiction of the Michigan Department of Corrections, which was established in 1937.
