Records of the State Prison of Southern Michigan, 1839-1896.

Series 14-15 and 17-18 of Record Group 56-27 consist of records relating to inmates of the Michigan State Prison for the years 1839-96. The record group includes a journal of transfers (1892-96) reporting various numbers and last names. Also in the record group is a population record (1857-61), giving names of convicts; date received, discharged, escaped or deceased; current population; and a record of convict labor for the years 1839-1853. The third item in this group is a record of punishment (1875), providing a daily record of punishment levied offering the full name of the offender, punishment, time lost and fine. The final item in the record group is a work attendance record (1869-73), providing a daily record of attendance of prisoners at work in shops, barns, or sick in hospital or in solitary confinement. This also includes statistics on aged, infirm and asylum patients.

The Michigan State Prison (also known as Jackson Prison) was established by law in Jackson, Michigan in 1838. The prison changed its name to the State Prison of Southern Michigan in 1935. The prison closed on January 4, 2002. The prison was under the jurisdiction of the Michigan Department of Corrections, which was established in 1937.
