This collection includes 49 views selected and copied from two albums owned by the Atlantic Richfield Co. The images depict transportation in Alaska during the years 1904 to 1910, with special focus on the old Valdez Trail which became the Richardson Highway. The Valdez Trail, a military road from Port Valdez to the Yukon River at Fort Egbert, was authorized for construction in 1899. Gold discoveries and the founding of Fairbanks increased traffic on the trail. Winter traffic over the trail usually began in October and lasted until the end of April while swampy summer conditions usually limited travel to foot. In 1905 the U.S. Alaska Road Commission was created to build and maintain trails and devoted much effort to the Valdez Trail. In the winter of 1906-07, 2,300 people, 160 head of cattle and 2,100 tons of freight left Valdez to go over the trail. Some left the trail at or near Wortmann's Roadhouse at about Mile 20 to take a sled road over Marshall Pass to the Copper River Valley, etc. During the 1908-09 season, 136,002 pounds of freight and mail were carried over the trail. Around 1911, the improved Valdez Trail became known as the Richardson Trail and then the Richardson Highway. Traffic over the road diminished with the completion of the Alaska Railroad from Seward to Fairbanks in 1923.

Albert J. Johnson was born in Denmark in 1880 and immigrated to the United States after he was orphaned. He arrived in Fairbanks in 1905 and worked as a photographer there until 1914. In 1910, he married Jennie Landers and their daughter, Alice, was born in 1912. In 1914, the family moved to California to farm.
