The Society of Friends (or 'Quakers') was formed by George Fox (1624-1691), a shoemaker from Nottingham. In the 1640s Fox travelled throughout England delivering sermons in which he argued that individuals could have direct access to God without the need for churches, priests or other aspects of the established Church. An Allowed Meeting, based at Fleece Lane in Leeds, opened in 1870, within Brighouse Monthly Meeting. This was attached to the new Adult School, opened in 1868 when the main Meeting moved to its new Meeting House at Carlton Hill. New premises were built in 1877 and the name of the school and its meeting for worship changed to Great Wilson Street.
