An Allowed Meeting opened in Ilkley in 1862, as part of Brighouse Monthly Meeting. It is said to have been settled from Addingham Meeting. It acquired its own purpose-built Meeting House in Queen's Road in 1869. A few years later, in 1872, it became a full Preparative Meeting. Thomas Pumphrey was briefly a member of the Meeting, after his retirement from Ackworth School in the months leading up to his death. The Society of Friends (or 'Quakers') was formed by George Fox (1624-1691), a shoemaker from Nottingham. In the 1640s Fox travelled throughout England delivering sermons in which he argued that individuals could have direct access to God without the need for churches, priests or other aspects of the established Church.
