The bulk of the records date from the early 20th century and consist of case records of poor women from Brattleboro, VT, and some from Rhinebeck, NY. These contain correspondence from clients and agents' case notes which provide a rich source of poor and working women's history in Brattleboro. A significant portion includes correspondence and papers of Richards M. Bradley, the trustee who oversaw the trust from 1901 to 1943. There are also records of the Brattleboro Mutual Aid Association and the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, including extensive material documenting the development of health insurance in the 1920s.

Wells, Florence H. (Florence Hemenway), 1878-1967

Florence Wells was born in 1878 and served as the local agent for the Thomas Thompson Trust in Brattleboro, Vermont from 1921 to the early 1960s. The Trust was founded in 1907 to provide assistance for poor and working class women. TTT sought to prevent illness among working women and their families through public health programs, and dispensed small amounts of money to the women in the form of loans. Wells was also very active in the Congregational Church in Brattleboro. She died in 1967. ...
