Autograph letter signed from J. Astley Cooper, St. Stephen's Club, Westminster, to Sir Henry Irving [manuscript], 1905 July 20.

Requesting an appointment with Irving to advise "a South African friend of mine--Mrs. Herzberg, who has come over here and is anxious to go on the stage in a Shakespearian character" (the American actress Sadie Jerome). A note in Irving's hand states: "Difficult to advise hardly think present times are specious for experiment strongly advise abandonment." Includes chromolithographed picture postcard of Sadie Jerome (Mrs. Herzberg) and her baby.

Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905) was a British actor-manager. Born Feb. 6, 1838, in Keinton Mandeville, Somerset, Eng., he died Oct. 13, 1905, in Bradford, Yorkshire. Irving's original name was John Henry Brodribb. He achieved early success and began to play leading roles throughout London, often with Ellen Terry.
