This portion of record group 59-5 consists of a map from the Michigan Geological Survey Division. The map was lithographed by Chas. Hart of New York in 1884. Includes insets of the State Public School, Detroit City Hall, Michigan University, State House of Correction, State Capitol, Isle Royale, capitol at Washington, Marquette, Negaunee, and statistics.

The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921).
