The collection contains primarily the correspondence and teaching materials of Richard Austin Rice, professor of Modern Languages and Art History. These include correspondence regarding the management of American and German museums, lectures, study prints, a card file of his collections, and a diary of a trip through New England. Also included are correspondence with Rice's wife, Marion, and his son, Richard Ashley Rice.

Richard Austin Rice (1846-1936) was born in Madison, Conn., and graduated from Yale with an A.B. degree in 1868 and a B.D. degree from the Divinity School in 1872. He worked as professor of Modern Languages at the University of Vermont, 1875-1881, before joining the faculty of Williams College, also as professor of Modern Languages.
