Goldschmidt and Haas Manuscript

This collection contains two original copies of the unpublished 1946 government report "Possessory Rights of the Natives of Southeast Alaska," written by Walter A. Goldschmidt and Theodore H. Haas. This report was originally submitted to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs in 1946, but was edited and enhanced by Tom Thornton and co-published in 1998 by the Sealaska Heritage Institute and University of Washington Press under the title Haa Aani, Our Land: Tlingit and Haida Land Rights and Use. The collection also contains one folder of correspondence dating to 1994-1995 between Walter Goldschmidt, Tom Thornton, and president of the Sealaska Heritage Institute, Dennis Demmert, about the report and work towards having it published.
