Benjamin B. McCowen, his brother Duncan Green McCowen, and his brother-in-law E. Cisero Trammell (husband of "Lizzie") were in the 53rd Regiment, Company K during the Civil War. Benjamin was killed in the battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863 and Cisero died of measles on August 7, 1862 in Richmond, Virginia.
