Diary of Elias Smith, kept 18 July 1753, in an interleaved almanac. Entries note the examination given to Smith and his classmates prior to their graduation from Harvard College. Also, an account of money given by each student as a gift to the class tutor, Belcher Hancock, upon their graduation.

Samuel Mather (1677-1746) was a member of a prominent Connecticut family. He was born in Branford, Connecticut in 1677; his parents were the Reverend Samuel and Hannah (Treat) Mather. When Samuel was four, his family moved to Windsor, Connecticut. He attended Harvard College, receiving an A.B. in 1698 and an A.M. in 1701. The early 19th century was a time of student unrest at Harvard. Perhaps in reaction to the disturbances and protest of previous classes, Faculty Records vol.
