Whitney Henry Mitchell correspondence, 1862-1865 [microform]

Henry Mitchell Whitney was an educator and a Congregational minister from Northampton, Massachusetts, who enlisted in C Company, 52nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry on September 19, 1862. On October 14, 1862, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major, left C Company, and became a member of the regimental staff. After seeing service at Baton Rouge and Port Hudson, La., the regiment, which had been enlisted for nine months, returned to Massachusetts and was mustered out on August 14, 1863. This microfilm edition of Whitney's papers is arranged in a single chronological sequence with a few undated items inserted at the end of the collection. After his discharge from the Army, Whitney took up service with the United States Christian Commission and was active in Virginia, where he served until 1865. The correspondence for those months is included in this microfilm.
