Marquis de Lafayette Manuscript Collection, 1777-1889.

Consists of approximately 330 manuscript pieces. A significant portion of the collection consists of letters written by Lafayette to George Washington, of which approximately 150 are original letters in Lafayette's own hand. Most of the letters date during the American Revolution. Seven of these letters contain deciphering of Lafayette's military code in Washington's hand. The collection also includes letters dating from 1777 to 1834 which are written by, to, and about Lafayette. These letters discuss a range of historical topics, particularly the French Revolution. One of the most valuable of these documents is Lafayette's manuscript address to the American House of Representatives during his Farewell Tour of 1824-25.
