Letter, 1799 June 21 (Charleston, S.C.) to Samuel D. Laurence (New York, N.Y.)

Letter between merchants in South Carolina and New York Byrnes explains that he was remitting payment for the balance of his account in rice and commenting on his transactions to aid his brother Caleb, "who is by no means in circumstances to loose money.... I should not however have done it - was not my Brother reduced already by his exertions to extricate, our Father's estate & place our afflicted Mother in a comfortable Situation." Byrnes wrote in the style of a Quaker, or a member of the Society of Friends, "I wrote thee... & now hand enclosed thy amount current..."; the Charleston Meeting remained active during the first two decades of the 19th century.
