Papers of Howard L. Stebbins, longtime librarian of Boston's Social Law Library, including family papers, personal papers, diaries, photographs, accounts, scrapbooks, and printed materials. Family papers include genealogical materials; personal papers include family correspondence, Social Law Library records, and clippings; four diaries include two by Mary Stebbins, Howard Stebbins' mother, 1862 and 1870; family and personal photographs include four daguerreotypes (onsite); three ledgers include annual family financial summaries, 1904-1957; seven scrapbooks contain correspondence, clippings, photographs, etc., 1903-1949; and printed materials include a biography of Lucy Poate Stebbins (wife of Howard) by their son Richard Poate Stebbins, and Howard L. Stebbins' funeral booklet.

The daughter of Baptist missionaries in Japan, author Lucy (Poate) Stebbins was the third of five children of Belle (Marsh) and Thomas Pratt Poate. She was born in Portsmouth, England, while her parents were on furlough, but returned with them to Japan before she was two. The family settled in western New York State in 1892. Stebbins was graduated from the Fredonia Normal School in 1904. She taught school in Sherman and Mt. Vernon, N.Y. until her marriage in 1910 to Howard Leslie Stebbins. In 19...
