Sampson Erdeswicke (circa 1538-1603) was a Staffordshire recusant who pursued historical and antiquarian studies in his later years. His work on Staffordshire circulated in manuscript throughout the seventeeth century, and was first published in 1717 under the title A Survey of Staffordshire. From the description of View of Staffordshire : conteynynge the antiquities of the same county / written by Sampson Erdeswick of Sandon neare Strafford in the same county, Esq., circa 1600-1650....
