Discusses Mrs. Breland's childhood as an underprivileged white girl growing up in downtown Hattiesburg. Relates her school memories, including the basic curricula and social activities. Recalls race relations in Hattiesburg during the 1960s and shares her reactions, as a local race-moderate, to the Freedom Summer project. Also discusses Hattiesburg's westward growth.

Mrs. Breland was born in 1940 near Utica, Mississippi. Soon after her birth her family moved to Hattiesburg, where she attended Walthall School, Hawkins Junior High School, and Hattiesburg High School. After graduation, she began 37 years of service with Southern Bell Telephone. Since her retirement, she earned a Master's degree and has served on the Walthall Foundation.
