The collection consists of ten letters, a printed biography, and a clipped portrait. Letters include: to E.C. Stedman, 27 Apr. 1873, praising an article he had written; to Dear Miller, 12 Aug. 1879, discussing books; to E.C. Stedman, 10 Feb. 1888, thanking him for the note and cheque; to Dear Mr. Edgett, 9 March 1904, about Higginson's daughter; to Thomas Bailey Aldrich, 28 Feb. 1907, praising his poem on Longfellow read recently at the Longfellow Commemorative. Also, to Dear Mr. Moore, 17 March 1868, sending $10.00 to subscribe to The Radical; to Dear Mr. Morris, 20 April 1886, touching on Poe; to Dear Mr. Todd, 20 Aug. 1893, discussing candidates for the presidency of the Author's Club; to Dear Sir, 29 Oct. 1902, about a set of Thomas Taylor books he had sold; letter to My Dear Johnson, 23 May 1896, commenting on a poem Johnson had sent; clipped portrait with biographical data; and printed political biography of Higginson, playing up his reformist activities.

Higginson was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on December 22, 1823. He was a descendant of Francis Higginson, a Puritan minister and immigrant to the colony of Massachusetts Bay. His father, Stephen Higginson (born in Salem, Massachusetts, November 20, 1770; died in Cambridge, Massachusetts, February 20, 1834), was a merchant and philanthropist in Boston and steward of Harvard University from 1818 until 1834.
