Joseph W. Smith served as a Confederate artilleryman in Virginia with Potts' North Carolina Battery (originally Company H, 40th Regiment North Carolina Troops (3rd Regiment North Carolina Artillery), then Company F, 13th Battalion North Carolina Light Artillery).
