Zamzam Scrapbook, 1941-1942 1941-1942.

This series consists of a scrapbook containing material from various news sources from 1941-1942 about the attack and subsequent sinking of the Zamzam. Newspaper clippings begin with May 19, 1941, the day people in the United States learned of the attack and sinking. Newspapers and magazines from which articles were collected include, among others, the Minneapolis Star Journal, Minneapolis Morning Tribune, Rock Island Argus, St. Paul Dispatch, New York Post, New York Times, New York Herald Tribune, Chicago Daily News, and Life Magazine. In addition to newspaper and magazine articles, there are also examples of prints ads using the Zamzam incident, and book reviews and promotional material for books written recounting the attack. The Life magazine article is of particular interest in that two of the magazine's staff members, a writer and a photographer, had been passengers on the Zamzam during its fateful voyage. The article contains photographs taken shortly after the shelling occurred and while people were being rescued from lifeboats. Scrapbook pages are brittle and quite fragile. The covers of the scrapbook were detached for processing purposes, but remain with the rest of the pages. There was also an additional envelope of clippings that were not affixed to scrapbook pages. These have been photocopied and placed in a folder.
