Correspondence of the Lutheran Augustana Mission (LAM) from 1949-1962 comprises the records in this series. There is handwritten and typewritten correspondence to and from the LAM that pertains to a variety of subjects related to the church's mission and the mission field of China and Hong Kong in general. There is a small amount of correspondence in Chinese. The majority of the letters are written on behalf of the LAM and are authored by the chairmen of the mission. Subjects discussed include general mission field matters, such as missionaries' travel expenses, furlough location and time, Hong Kong income tax for missionaries, budgetary concerns, funding of capital projects, and sponsoring of scholarships. In addition to topics involving general business matters, there are also several pieces of correspondence in folder 1 pertaining to the question of whether or not to evacuate the seminary to British North Borneo. Early correspondence also includes observations regarding the political situation in China, the Communists' relationship with Christian churches, and the broader topic of religious freedom in China. Dr. Herbert Zimmerman and the Rev. Donald O. Nelson, chairmen of the LAM, are the primary authors of the correspondence. Other authors include Dr. Melvin Hammarberg, Mr. A.B. Strom, Minnie Tack, and the Rev. David Vikner. Records are arranged chronologically.
