Includes letters, 1852-1853, written by Stevens from Richmond, Virginia to his parents, describing his travels and his observations of society and slavery; incoming correspondence about his work in Virginia; and a letter, 1856, from G.W. Baldwin describing Council Bluffs, Iowa and a confrontation with southerners. Also includes patent papers for improvements in railway lamps, 1854; a self-closing hatchway, 1876; a doorstop, 1868; and a furniture caster, 1871; a pocket memorandum book, 1856; and a diary of his young daughter, Addie, 1865. Collection also contains the following related to Captain Phineas Stevens: a letter, Aug. 12, 1845, from Joseph Bennett, Andover, Mass., to Phineas Stevens, civil engineer, Lowell, Mass., concerning water levels at foot of unidentified wheel and canal; a patent (No. 3555) awarded to Phineas Stevens of Nashua, NH, Apr. 20, 1844 for "improvements in the flyer and dead spindle for spinning," with original drawing attached; a note to his son, Apr. 17, 1844 re his travel arrangements; a phrenological character analysis, Sept. 7, 1844; his appointment as ensign in the Mass. militia, May 1, 1821; his appointment as lieutenant in the Mass. militia, Mar. 29, 1825; a letter from M.D. Ross, Dec. 30, 1848, regarding a gold watch awarded to Stevens by the contractors and a chain awarded by Mr. Lawrence upon completion of the foundation of the Bay State Mills, Lawrence, Mass.
