This collection contains the personal and business papers of a number of members of this Salem, Mass., family. The papers of Richard Jr. (1755-1813) include account books for his blacksmith and livery stable business, memo books containing accounts of his voyages and travels to Raymond, Maine, deeds, estate and other legal papers of Manning and his wife, Miriam Lord Manning, and estate account books detailing his estate. The papers of his son Richard (1782-1830) focus primarily on his work as executor and administrator of his father's estate. The Raymond Town (Raymond), Maine papers contain bills, tax assessments, lot assignments, and other material relating to the real estate investment in Raymond, Maine, by Manning and other prominent Salem residents. The Robert Manning (1784-1842) papers contain business and financial papers, many of which relate to his interest in fruit culture and the breeding of fruit species, particularly pears, and detail his horticultural nursery in Salem. Papers of his wife, Rebecca Dodge Manning, and two of his children, Robert (1827-1902) and Rebecca Burnham (1834-1933) Manning, include correspondence, bills, and receipts. The Manning Family papers include business, legal, and financial papers of William (1778-1864) and Samuel (1791-1833) Manning, including an account book for Samuel Manning and Company. The Manning Family/Hawthorne papers include primarily bills and receipts pertaining to author Nathaniel Hawthorne and other members of the Hawthorne family, plus a translation of a book on gardens by Hawthorne's sister, Elizabeth Manning Hawthorne.
