Papers of William Hartwell Perry, Jr., 1860-1865.

Letters from William Hartwell (Willie) Perry to his family describe life as a member of the Richmond Howitzers. Perry saw action in the Orange County and Richmond area, participating in and describing the siege of Yorktown, the battle of Williamsburg, Seven Pines (Fair Oaks), Seven Days, and the Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg campaigns. A long analysis of the Confederate failure at Gettysburg is included in a letter of July 8, 1863. In addition to battles and campaigns Perry discusses winter quarters at Camp Shields and Hamilton's Crossing; the "Fort Donelson disaster"; Richmond and meetings of the Confederate Congress with mention of William P. Miles, Henry S. Foote, Thomas S. Bocock, and Francis S. Lyon; smallpox vaccination; decline of the cavalary's reputation after Brandy Station; the character of Jefferson Davis; monotonous life in a camp near Gordonsville in the fall of 1863; and general pessimism over military blunders, lack of supplies, and poor leadership. With the collection are a memoranda and medical fee account book, 1860-1865, belonging to William Hartwell Perry, Sr., a Lunenberg County, Va., physician and farmer, and University of Virginia alumnus. The memoranda book contains Latin exercies, personal expenses and medical fees. The diary describes weather and crops with some reference to the Civil War.
