Series 4 of record group RG 81-14 consists of mine notebooks for the years 1911-1973. These notebooks are comprised of letters, articles, and clippings once bound individually by mine. Subject content deals with such matters as description of property; number of acres owned or worked; valuation of estate; ore production and reserves; yield of metal per ton mined; profits; and recent developments.

The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921).
