Series 4 of record group RG 80-33 consists of publications of the Geological Survey (1902-1970). Includes biennial reports, county reports, and unfinished publications. The biennial reports were made by the Dept. of Conservation and review the affairs of the Geological Survey and its staff. The county reports cover the geologic history of Branch, Hillsdale, Kalamazoo, Lenawee, Midland, Ogemaw, Saginaw, and Shiawassee counties. These reports were written in 1957/58 and also includes is an activities outline for the schools for the year 1952. The unfinished publications include a lab manual and one manuscript. The lab manual is on rocks and minerals. The manuscript is about the geology of Chippewa County.

The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921).
