Mrs. Hill's diary descibes life in North Carolina during the Civil War. The diary begins with September 1860 entries on the death of her husband and a trip to New York. The diary continues in 1862 with her wartime flight from Wilmington to Chapel Hill. She notes daily life as an evacuee in Chapel Hill; war news; news of family and friends, particularly son Tom in Virginia with the Burt Rifles (Co. K., 18th Regt. Mississippi Volunteers and Fred with Peter B. Starke's Washington Cavalry (Co. D., 28th Regt. Missisippi Volunteers; and church and social activities. Entries of interest discuss son Joe's payment for a substitute; a copy of son Tom's letter on his participation in the battle of Chancellorsville; yellow fever; preparations for her daughter Eliza's wedding to Captain James M. Mason; and a journey to Columbus, and "Belfont" near Fort Gaines, Ga., to visit the newlyweds. There are occasional comments on slaves including Tom's man servant Noah. Several partial manuscript and typescript transcripts are included.
