Letters to Malcolm Franklin, 1942-1959.

Faulkner writes to Franklin from Burbank, Calif., 1942-1943, about the effects of World War II on daily life, including shortages and rationing. He commends Franklin's decision to join the service and the wartime service of the children of Robert Haas. He comments on the necessity of the war and discusses the Tuskegee Airmen's being granted the right to fly by Congress, predicting that "a change will come out of this war." Faulkner writes to Franklin from New York City, 1953, discussing family affairs including Jill's graduation from Pine Manor Junior College; work on the Rowan Oak house; his writing, particularly "A fable," a hunting story, and the script for "Land of the Pharaohs"; the production of "Requiem for a nun"; and Christmas presents. Howard Hawks and Robert Linscott are both mentioned. A letter from Charlottesville, Va., 1957, announces his trip to Greece for the State Dept., and mentions grandchildren Paul Summers and Mark Franklin. The collection also contains a letter, 1953, from Saxe Commins to Franklin and his wife reassuring the family that Faulkner is doing well in New York.
