Patrick Callanan scrapbook, 1869-1913 (bulk 1869-1877).

The scrapbook includes newspaper clippings (mostly poetry), programs, brochures and other ephemera. It also includes a few passages written in Callanan's own hand. Much of the material relates to music, theater, religious and oratorical activities sponsored by Boston College.

In 1863, a charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts authorized five Jesuits of Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus to incorporate as β€œthe Trustees of the Boston College.” Their South End school became the first chartered college to operate in Boston in September 1864, when twenty-two boys – with an average age of fourteen – enrolled and classes began. Priest and Boston College alumnus (Class of 1877). Patrick H. Callanan was born on February 4, 1855 in New York City. He entered Boston College on September 13, 1869 and graduated on June 28, 1877 as part of Boston College's first graduating class. In 1880, Callanan was ordained to the priesthood at St. Joseph's Seminary in Troy, New York. Beginning 1881, he served as priest to several parishes in the Boston area. He died on October 29, 1933.
