Register of permits to enter the Marine Hospital at New Orleans, 1870 July-1887 Dec.

Register giving name of seamen admitted, their age, nativity (country or state), length of time in American service, the name of the vessel on which they last sailed, the date of the permits admitting the seamen to the hospital, the number of days they could stay in the hospital, their illness, its outcome, and the date of discharge. During this time period patients were mostly cared for in hospitals under contract to the Marine Hospital Service. The Hotel-Dieu is identified as receiving patients from Nov. 1871 to July 1882, when patients were assigned to the Touro Infirmary. Commencing with May, 1885, patients were sent to the newly-opened Marine Hospital in New Orleans. Marine Hospital Service surgeons and assistant surgeons assigned to New Orleans are listed at the front.
