Part I, Naval Aviation, consists of materials on naval air stations and naval aviation subjects, and a series of reports from the Naval Air Material Center, Philadelphia, Pa. These items cover the history of naval aviation from World War I through the immediate post-World War II period. Part II, the Papers of Lieutenant Commander John Mitchell consists of about 3 inches of documents and additional oversize material. These relate to French Equatorial and British Africa, where Commander Mitchell traveled in 1941 and 1942, accumulating intelligence for the report A Survey of Central African Seaports and Air Routes, 27 August 1941-5 January 1942. A draft of the survey report is included.

Jerome Clarke Hunsaker was an aeronautical engineer and designer. Born in Creston, Iowa in 1886, he graduated from the United States Naval Academy and later received a Doctorate of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
